This feature of a small-scale unit is of great significance in a country like India where the number of unemployed people is more. Local Area of Operation: Small businesses are largely local in operation; however the market for its products may be local, regional or even international.

Short Gestation Period: The capital investment in the small sector is generally low and the time taken for production to commence is also less.

As a result of short gestation period the units give quick returns and consequently the pace of economic development quickens. No large number of formalities are required to start a SSI.

Industries which have been started with the aim of taking advantage of the demand are known as demand based SSI. They need not to search downloaders for the product as they are easily accepted by the consumers. This type of situation does not continue for a long time but by the time such situation arises the entrepreneur might have established them firmly in the market and developed the capabilities to withstand the demand fluctuation.
